Maintaining a personal healthy weight is one of the most important steps in obtaining a healthy lifestyle. A simple way for adults to assess what is considered to be within a healthy weight range is by using the body mass index. A body mass index or BMI is a measurement used by most medical professionals to determine obesity. BMI is calculated by dividing a patient’s weight in kilograms by the patient’s height in meters squared.

If a patient’s BMI is greater than 25 in a patient is considered to be overweight, with a BMI of 30 or greater a patient’s would be determined to be obese. The BMI numbers were based on associations between a chronic disease and mortality, with were and still are used internationally amongst the medical professionals including the World Health Organization.
