Determining Your Proper Weight
Weight loss will act to lower any elevated blood pressure in people who are overweight and or obese. Weight loss can also contribute to lower levels of total cholesterol as well as to raise low levels of HDL cholesterol and overweight or obese people. It is important to use the BMI to determine if you or your children are overweight or obese and exactly to what level. Body weight alone cannot be used to determine an ideal way for someone, or the type of therapy they should use when trying to decrease their weight.
Whenever someone is trying to lose weight, an important rule of thumb is to not lose more than 1 or 2 pounds per week, and not for a period longer than six months. Healthy weight loss is gained through maintaining a diet that will help you lose weight, but will also help you determine your proper weight. The initial goal of the person trying to lose weight should be to reduce their body weight by no more than 10%. If a person is successful in reducing their weight by 10% and necessary additional weight loss can be pursued.
